Tayside's Independent Hillwalking Club
History
taysidetrekkers was founded in October 2002, and has gone from strength to strength with now over 100 people on the mailing list. taysidetrekkers are based on the principle that no one is too old to walk in the hills. In fact we are proud of the fact that we have a wide range of ages from 21 years old to 67 years young.
Our motto is simple; we are a ‘Young at Heart Walking Group’. After an inaugural meeting at The Bank Bar, 7/9 Union Street, Dundee, a small committee was formed and a first Walks Programme was produced and the walking began. It was a bit slow at first, some weeks had healthy numbers, others didn’t, but never disheartened we persevered. Our second Walks Programme came out and so began a steady increase in numbers on each walk. So much so that we had our first weekend away as a group in April 2004, a hardy 25 souls with a full Walks Programme centred around Callander in The Trossachs. This weekend proved to be an enormous success, so much so that it has become an Annual event, with trips to the Lake District organised for the past three years.
In 2008, we are planning to venture abroad for the first time - Eire - to attempt the Irish 3000's, culminating in The MacGillicuddy Reek's. Our new Walks Programme can be found in another section, and if you feel that you would like to join us for any of the walks, don’t hesitate to contact us, As a great philosopher once said when coming off a hill – ‘Stop. Look back, and think to yourself, is this the end or just the beginning ?’
